{"id":3708,"date":"2019-06-17T13:00:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T17:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advmedtechconf.wpengine.com\/?p=3708"},"modified":"2019-06-17T13:40:10","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T17:40:10","slug":"medtech-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themedtechconference.com\/medtech-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"MedTech Compliance Values"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Nancy Travis, Vice President, International Compliance and Governance at AdvaMed<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Global MedTech Compliance\nConference that occurred in Paris this past May, I heard a lot of discussion\naround values-based compliance systems. This to me is emblematic of a shift\naway from rules-based, \u201ccheck-the-box\u201d compliance programs and toward something\nmore comprehensive, and a change in culture within the health care system, the\nmedtech space and individual companies themselves.&nbsp;By focusing on values,\ncompanies seem to recognize that ethical practices can and must permeate\nthroughout the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this conference, the Advanced\nMedical Technology Association (AdvaMed), announced the revision of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advamed.org\/resource-center\/advamed-us-code-ethics-final-eff-jan-1-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code of Ethics on Interactions with U.S. Health Care\nProfessionals<\/a>, effective January 1, 2020. One of the most noteworthy\nimprovements in the AdvaMed code is, in fact, the inclusion of a new section on\nvalues.&nbsp;Called \u201cCornerstone Values,\u201d the code instructs medtech companies\nto review all interactions with health care professionals, considering these\nvalues and avoid anything that would circumvent them.&nbsp;The values are as\nfollows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Innovation<\/strong>: Advance the development and availability\nof safe and effective medical technology that health care professionals use to\nimprove &amp; save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Education<\/strong>: Deliver high-quality training and\neducation to help ensure that health care professionals safely and effectively\nuse medical technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Integrity<\/strong>: Conduct business with integrity at all\ntimes and avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest with health care\nprofessionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Responsibility<\/strong>: Promote socially and ethically\nresponsible business practices that protect patients, their rights and their\nsafety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Transparency<\/strong>:&nbsp;Conduct interactions with health care\nprofessionals fairly, openly and transparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know from joining the revision\ndiscussions with the AdvaMed Code of Ethics Working Group &#8211; brilliantly\ndescribed by my former colleague Matt Wetzel in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/six-lessons-learned-from-leading-advameds-recent-code-matt-wetzel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this article<\/a>, \u201c that AdvaMed members undertook a\nthoughtful process to align these values with those articulated in recent years\nthrough the code development processes in Asia-Pacific (<a href=\"http:\/\/klprinciples.apec.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kuala\nLumpur Principles<\/a>, 2011), the Americas (<a href=\"http:\/\/interamericancoalition-medtech.org\/the-bogota-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bogota Principles<\/a>, 2017) and the global effort\nannounced last year at this meeting, when the Global Medical Technology\nAlliance (GMTA) approved a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalmedicaltechnologyalliance.org\/papers\/2018-Joint-Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joint Statement on Global Harmonization<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;Last\nmonth, the GMTA held the first meeting of the Global Compliance Network, where\nits member industry associations reaffirmed the values in that document and\ntheir pledge to work together to promote strong codes of ethics worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To continue this discussion, I\nalong with Jonathan Turner, Vice President of Ethics &amp; Compliance at Smith\n&amp; Nephew and Kristi Travers, Assistant General Counsel at Johnson &amp;\nJohnson with Matt Wetzel, Senior Counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer &amp; Feld\nLLP moderating will speak at \u201cAdvaMed\u2019s New Code of Ethics: Is Your Company\nPrepared to Comply\u201d session at The MedTech Conference in Boston this September.\nWe will be discussing the Code of Ethics on Interactions with Health Care\nProfessionals and how to get your company into compliance with only a few\nmonths left to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AdvaMed is looking forward to\nworking with its medtech colleagues worldwide, as well as all health care\nindustry stakeholders, to continue to advance these cornerstone values and\nbuild a firm ethical foundation for the medtech industry across the\nglobe.&nbsp;We have a bright future ahead of us in medtech compliance.\nTogether, we will facilitate a medical technology industry that sincerely\nserves the best interests of its patients, no matter where in the world they\nreceive their care. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nancy Travis, Vice President, International Compliance and Governance at AdvaMed At the Global MedTech Compliance Conference that occurred in Paris this past May, I heard a lot of discussion around values-based compliance systems.
